Adult Education
Ozanam House Adult Education programme is continuing to support our students in these challenging times.
We have started our cookery class from home programme. Our cookery teachers have started a 6 week course were each week students receive recipes by post with a star ingredient.
This weeks star ingredient is – lentils.
Students are provided with information on the health benefits and a variety of recipes. A link to a video is also sent for students that want to follow a demonstration. Keep an eye here for more information and links to our demos… coming soon!
Our Art class students have received materials and a weekly exercise book to continue building their art skills.
This week they are focusing on – portraits.
Along with the booklet our art teacher has provided a video demonstration to all participants.
Our Dress Making class have all received activity packs and materials so our members are now keeping busy making furnishings for the home
Yoga with our amazing instructor Cormac on Monday evening is Ozanam House Adult Education’s first online class and is so popular with our members.
As we don’t have the ability to run all of our classes remotely we are sending activities or gift by post to the remaining students.
Our Adult Education programmes are still in operation. We understand the importance of making contact with participants – checking in and letting them know what services they can avail of from us over the coming weeks and months. Our plan is to offer online learning platforms and supports and to run a shortened term of classes before or during the Summer depending on when we can re-open in the centre.
Some important points to note for now:
In the mean time we will be offering the following services over the coming weeks
Our team of staff and teachers are planning to provide what resources we can to different classes through learner activity packs or online classes and tutorials. Some examples of these are:
So, watch this space for more great learning opportunities in Adult Education.

Our organisation
Ozanam House is a community resource centre run by the Society of Saint Vincent de Paul. It is located on the site of the original clothing and furniture warehouse in a building that has also been used by the Society for a variety of purposes for over 100 years. Since our opening in September 2002 we have continued to develop various programmes and projects aimed at addressing the issue of social exclusion as well as the many needs of the local community in Dublin’s north inner city. The centre now offers over 600 programme places to more than 500 people per week where our youngest member is 2 and our eldest is 96. We also engage 75 active volunteers who share their time and skills each week for the benefit of others.
Adult Education – Computer Training Programme
One of our biggest programmes is our computer classes. Each individual course runs for 10 weeks and each class is 1.5 hours in duration. With a maximum of 8 people per class and offering 12 different classes per week, this popular programme is offered to the entire community. It provides an opportunity for people to develop more confidence in themselves and in their skills and an improved sense of self-worth through a better understanding of computers and general IT. It also enhances peoples understanding of computers as an effective communication tool in today’s society leading to improved social Interaction and engagement through mobile technology, internet and email. Overall we aim to provide learners with new skills and with an improved and enhanced ability and confidence to engage positively in these communities.
A lot of our members can have had a negative experience of education in the past and it can be a big step for them to come back into any educational training. We therefore ensure we provide a very relaxed educational environment where their needs are at the centre of everything we do.
Overview of the Volunteer Role
One of the main aims of this programme is to assist local families and individuals in the basic and practical understanding of information technology and its value and use in today’s modern society. We offer courses to those who want to learn the basic skills and to those who have these skills but want to take them to the next level. Programmes offered range from complete introduction and beginner classes, improver levels, computer maintenance and management, mobile technology (phones, tablets), as well as internet and email focused classes.
To reach our full potential and to achieve our goals in the classes, we
are constantly seeking new volunteers to share their IT skills and to teach
these classes in an informal setting. Our classes are focused on the needs of
the individuals who take them. We operate course content outlines for each
class offering participants a guideline to what they will learn. Within these
guidelines we run the classes according to the participant’s skill levels and
learning abilities. Volunteers are not required to be fully qualified IT
teachers as the focus is on sharing their own IT skills with participants to
achieve these goals.
Tasks
Time commitment
The computer centre is open Monday to Friday and the classes run as follows:
(the exact days and times of classes you will work with will be agreed between the volunteer and the programme co-ordinator). The volunteer should commit to a minimum period of nine months. This covers 3 terms with each term lasting 10 weeks. This offers consistency to a class level and offers the volunteer the opportunity to develop that class well over this time, maximising the benefit of you as a teacher to the learners.
Other Volunteer roles
In addition, we welcome applications from potential volunteers who have specific expertise or skills which they can contribute. For example, volunteers in the past have delivered courses in desktop publishing, digital photography and mobile phone use (smart phones). Based on the skills offered we can tailor a course for a term of 10 weeks. The time commitment for these volunteers will be agreed in advance with the co-ordinator.
Skills, Experience & Qualities Required
Training & Induction
Support & Supervision
The co-ordinator will be responsible for the supervision of the volunteer. Volunteers will meet with their co-ordinator either in one-to-one meetings, or in team meetings meetings to discuss ongoing progress and any issues arising.
General volunteer meetings, for all volunteers, will take place twice a year, in May and November.

Adult Education – Cookery Training Programme
One of our most popular programmes is our cookery training centre otherwise known as our “Healthy Options Centre”. Each individual course runs for 10 weeks and each class is 2hrs in duration.
The courses we run in our cookery training room aim to provide people with simple and basic skills required to provide healthy meals for themselves and their families. They are based on the understanding that healthy eating does not have to be difficult or expensive. Each class also includes some nutritional information with the aim of educating people about the foods we eat and the effect these foods can have on our general wellbeing.
These courses also involve a more practical approach on how to cook healthy food on a budget.
We are offering two types of courses:
1) Cooking for the family – Wednesday 7pm – 9pm & Thursday 10:30am – 12:30pm
This is a more beginners orientated class to teach people basic cookery skills
2) Come Dine with me – Thursday 7pm – 9pm
This class is a more developed class for people who can cook but would like to learn new dishes. It should help to enhance cooking skills in an informal and social cooking atmosphere.
The aim of this centre is to limit the use of fast food as the main elements in the diets of the community, offering them a healthier option in this regard while at the same time teaching them some useful culinary skills that will benefit them and their families throughout their lives.
As cookery is a skill everyone would aspire to having our groups can be diverse in age, ethnicity, learning capacity and personal background. This allows for a nice balance of members in the class and can create a good sense of community in the class as groups can reflect our world around us.
Overview of the volunteer role
To reach our full potential and to achieve our goals in the classes, we are constantly seeking new volunteers to share their cookery skills and to teach these classes in an informal setting. Our classes are focused on the needs of the individuals who take them. Each class has a team of 2 teachers who work together sharing tasks and lead teaching each week.
Tasks
Time commitment
Classes in the cookery centre run on Wednesday evenings from 7:00 to 9:00pm, Thursday morning from 10:30am to 12:30pm and evening from 7:00 to 9:00pm.
The volunteer should commit to at least one of the classes mentioned above plus extra time for the preparation of the classes (the exact times and days of working will be agreed between the volunteer and the programme co-ordinator). The volunteer should commit to a minimum period of nine months. This covers 3 terms with each term lasting 10 weeks. This offers consistency to a class level and offers the volunteer the opportunity to develop that class well over time.
Other volunteers
In addition, we welcome applications from potential volunteers who have specific expertise or skills which they can contribute. For example, volunteers in the past have delivered training in baking, sugar craft, First Aid in the kitchen and taught specific applicable skills to the group. Based on the skills offered we can tailor a course for a term of 10 weeks. The time commitment for these volunteers will be agreed in advance with the coordinator.
