ARG Trip to the Freemason’s Hall

The group went on a tour of the Freemason’s. The Freemason’s Hall is on Molesworth St and is the only purpose-built Masonic meeting place in Dublin. It was the first permanent home of the Freemasonry in Ireland.

The group visited a variety of rooms which were decorated in different styles e.g. Egyptian and Middle Eastern. The tour guide explained the variety of rituals performed in each room during their meetings.

The group found the tour very informative and interesting and the tour guide was a fount of knowledge. Unfortunately, the lift is currently broken and the tour itself involves a lot of steps which some of the group found difficult.

A truly wonderful exotic building well worth a visit. There is a coffee shop on the ground floor which is open most days which may be worth another visit on a different occasion.

SVP – Celebrating 180 Years in Ireland

Ozanam House as part of the Saint Vincent de Paul are delighted to celebrate our 180th anniversary.

In 1844, the first SVP Conference, St Michan’s, was established in Dublin and since then, has spread through every one of the 32 counties meeting the needs of those everywhere who seek our help.

Throughout every period of change our members have been a bedrock of support for hundreds of thousands of Irish people. Our 180th anniversary Members Day on 20th April in the Dublin Convention Centre will be an opportunity to celebrate our history in Ireland but also to use the occasion to reflect and renew our commitment as we face into another period of societal change.

Blessed Frederick Ozanam

Blessed Frederick Ozanam

We take our inspiration from Blessed Frederick Ozanam, one of our principal founders. As a young university student in Paris in 1833, he and six companions set up a ‘Conference of Charity’ visiting poor people, bringing food, clothing, and friendship. They adopted St Vincent de Paul as their patron.

Active Retirement Group Poem

The ARG have been getting their creative juices moving and produced a lovely poem reflecting on stages of life.

Child

I saw a child,
A spoilt child,
Playing games,
Having fun,
Girls wearing pink,
Boys wearing blue,

Then that child at 16,
Who loved to dance,
She danced in the dark,
With no trouble at the door,

Growing up like her big sister,
with money in her pocket,
And a big adult job,
She put on her make up,
And her Jimmy Choo shoes,

Suddenly she dancing in the dark,
But she is no longer alone,
Her hands are held tightly,
She is hearing lullabies in her ear,

But it’s time for me to grow up,
Soon I will be a mother myself,
With tiny feet kicking inside,
I wonder when will you be born?

But it’s time to grow up again,
Now that I’m a grandmother,

I’m minding the grand children,
We are visiting the Zoo and chasing,
Imaginary animals in the street,
They are wearing their superhero t-shirts,
And I’m the big bad wolf.

Bewley’s Theatre Outing

The ARG group went to Bewley’s Café Theatre to see The Rising of the Moon a play by Lady Gregory. The staff in Bewley’s were very welcoming as was the staff in the Theatre. The lunchtime show was a short show of 30 minutes leaving plenty of time for anyone to watch it during their lunch break.

The actors were very good and there was a good suspensive atmosphere created whilst the officers were on the lookout for a dangerous criminal.

There was plenty of tables and chairs for everyone to sit at and you could buy some soup and brown bread whilst the show was on. The Theatre itself was fully accessible by lift and had full access to accessible bathrooms

Mansion House Outing

The ARG group went to the Mansion House for an exhibition and discussion on Accessibility. The exhibition was called Access to the Public Realm in Picture.

The discussion was supported by The Lord Mayor of Dublin Daithi de Roiste, Cllr Declan Meenagh and Mick Keegan a member of the Disability Thematic Group.

A very informative presentation was provided and at the end of the presentation there was time for questions and answers.

The group were also invited to participate in some tea/coffee and some croissants.

Taking in the History

Everyone really enjoyed the outing and some of the feedback from the group include the following:

‘I really enjoyed the tour and learnt things I didn’t know before about the war.’

‘In school the teacher sat up at the top of the class and just read history none of it sank in.’

‘We learnt more about the effects of the war on individual men and women than we did at school.’

‘The guide was very clear and he was a great speaker and you could hear him. He was very interesting.’
