Ozanam Come Dancing 2022 – Joanna and Nigel

Joanna
I am an Office Administrator with a great passion for community development projects.

I was involved with youth work around Sherriff Street, worked for Dublin City Council Summer Camps and volunteered for Irish Cancer Society. I witnessed a great deal of grass root community projects led and completed by the St Vincent de Paul and I feel proud and privileged to be a part of the Ozanam Come Dancing event.

I’ve always had a passion for dancing and since January 2022 I have, along with my partner Nigel, been taking Ballroom Dance classes. I can’t wait to put on my red dancing shoes and raise as much funds as possible.

Nigel
I am a Database Administrator currently with AXA Insurance Ireland, previously with the likes of the HSE, AIB and other large organisations. My involvement with community projects has been in supporting Joanna in her many endeavours in this field.

Prior to January this year, my dancing expertise had been solely (and reluctantly) moving from left to right (and back again) on the dance floor, normally from half way into a song once I’ve been persuaded to get up and ‘dance’.

I’ve been extremely impressed by what I’ve seen and heard about Ozanam House and am proud to make my small, but hopefully sizeable, contribution.

Ozanam Come Dancing 2022 – Karen and James

Karen

Hello there, I’m Karen. I study Radiation Therapy at Trinity College but in my dreams, I am a professional dancer. Ha ha! When not in college, I work part-time.

I heard of Ozanam House quite recently through the Saint Vincent De Paul Society at college. There was an open invitation for anyone who wanted to take part in the dancing, and I quickly signed up.

I have taken various dance classes over the years from Contemporary to Hip Hop. Recently, I have been dancing with an amazing community of dancers known as Southside Moves that focus on Afro Dance with some Twerk classes.

Honestly, I’m hoping to finally get my Strictly Come Dancing moment on stage and that glitter ball (if it’s there) and to raise some funds for Ozanam House, of course. My biggest fear is this whole experience having to come to an end. I can already tell that its going to be an amazing journey.

James
Hello guys, my name is James O’Leary. I’m a 21 year old student volunteer with Saint Vincent de Paul Trinity. I’m an Activity Leader in one of the after-school programmes in the Inner City. I have always loved working with kids, if not through SVP, as a Gaelic Football and Basketball Coach with Trinity Sports Summer Camps. The work that Ozanam House does for not only kids through their Youth Groups, but the wider local community is motivation enough for me to push through what lies ahead. I want to give this opportunity 110% as my part in helping facilitate the work Ozanam House does.

The minute I heard about this competition through our SVP President Ciara, I knew I had to do it! I had small bits of dancing experience from doing musicals and theatre shows growing up but I am always up to performing in front of a crowd. Mam had me watching Strictly Come Dancing as a child, so it was a dream to participate in a similar style of event. I am really excited to take on the challenge of learning a new dance from scratch, which is made much easier by having such a great partner in Karen, and a phenomenal dancing teacher in June. We are going to give a fiery, passionate and exciting performance for sure. We will be practising very hard, and would appreciate any donations. Thanks guys, and hope to see you all on show night!

Ozanam Come Dancing 2022 – Alison and Sandra

Alison
Hello, I am Alison, this is my first involvement with Ozanam House.

I’m a Team Leader in Tesco, where I’ve worked for over fifteen years. I’ve worked on several departments with copious amount of customer service skills. I also work with the Community Fund and help support local community causes through this.

I’ve no dance experience other than a few months of Irish Dancing when I was very young! I recently completed a Poundfit Pro course and teach the odd track with Carla Roberts. Poundfit is amazing and is a mix of Pilates and Cardio Jam using lightly weight drumsticks.  I got involved with Ozanam Come Dancing because a friend from Collective Fitness suggested it to me and the rest is history!

I hope to give back to the community. I’m a volunteer for the Scouts and it’s so rewarding seeing the joy in children’s faces. I can only imagine how much Ozanam House gives back to the community. The cherry on top is learning how to dance and have fun!

My biggest fear is not being able to pick up the dance, I can be a jinx so say a prayer for me that I don’t injure myself between now and showtime!!

Sandra
Hi! My name is Sandra and I became interested in Ozanam House through my work colleague Niamh. I love dancing, although I would consider myself an amateur. I am an advocate for Social Justice! So, it was a no brainer! I am so excited to be part of Ozanam House Strictly Come Dancing 2022; we’ll dance, have plenty of craic and raise money for a fantastic organisation.

Ozanam Come Dancing 2022 – Áine and Peadar

Áine

I worked as a volunteer with SVP years ago and became aware of Ozanam House and the brilliant programmes they offer. Our friends signed up for OCD and got us involved. I work in the area of Climate Education, helping businesses become more environmentally sustainable. I love dancing at parties and had to resort to dancing in the kitchen during Covid but we’ve never danced properly as a couple, even at our wedding. I hope to raise lots of funds for Ozanam House and surprise our family and friends with a knock out Charleston dance. Our friends who introduced us are extremely competitive but the fear of losing to them will spur us on!!

Peadar

My wife press ganged me into taking part to be honest. I’m delighted to be able to raise funds for Ozanam House and have a bit of craic along the way. When it comes to dancing, I’m no Fred Astaire. I did like a slow dance back in the day and dabbled in Irish Dancing as a young lad in Kildare. I’m an Engineer with Bord Gas Networks, my colleagues in work will be surprised to hear of this endeavour. We chose to learn the Charleston as it evoked fond memories of the dance scene in “It’s a Wonderful Life”, a movie we watch every Christmas with our daughters. I just hope that we don’t let them down:)

Ozanam Come Dancing 2022 – Sandra and Noel

Hi, my name is Sandra and together with my husband Noel we are delighted to take part in OCD for Saint Vincent de Paul. We heard about the Centre through a friend of ours who has been teaching the dance routines for OCD for the last few years. I have dance experience as I danced Ballroom & Latin Dance from a young age, and myself and my husband have taken part in other Strictly Come Dancing fundraisers for other local charities. Having visited the Centre and seen the amazing work they do for every age group, we are delighted to raise much needed funds for them.  Here’s to a fantastic night!
